Pioneer, the new MTG format, was just announced by Wizards of the Coast. It has there full tournament support, and they have announced future tournaments for the format. But what is Pioneer?
Pioneer is a non-rotating format, and the card pool is from Return to Ravnica and up. So that means you will be able to play cards from the Theros block, Tarkir block, Kaladesh block, and many more. A lot have been comparing it to frontier, and expecting it to fail, but there is a difference. Frontier had a smaller card pool and not a lot support from Wizards of the Coast. Pioneer is a bigger card pool, support from Wizards of the Coast, and even has competitive tournaments coming up.
Pioneer has so much possibility, looking at all the decks from past standards, it's hard to decide what deck to play! Before I go any further, I do want to say that there is a ban list, but it only includes the five fetch lands from Khans of Tarkir. Which is fine with me, but at the same time there is so many cards that have the potential of getting banned. Felidar Guardian, a key piece in the copy cat combo deck from a past standard, I feel has a good chance of getting banned. However, even though the card was banned in standard, it was still able to be played in modern, and didn't brake the format or even make a big impact. So I'll be interested to see how it works in Pioneer.
I could talk about more cards, like Aetherworks Marvel, which in it's time in standard got free eldrazi onto the battlefield, or Grim Flayer, which could be played in so many decks, Lord of the Accursed, Soul-Scar Mage, Siege Rhino, Liliana, the last hope, Emrakul, the Promised End, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, and even more! But that would make too long an article. So I'll be posting more on Pioneer in the future.
That's all for today! I'm interested to see where Pioneer goes, and what type of metagame it will have.
